A Trip To The Fenwick Lighthouse
In our very own Sussex county, sits a quaint and lovely island that promises to be a relaxing visit for you and your family. Fenwick Island is a neighbor with Bethany Beach and Ocean City, Maryland. The island was named after a planter from England who moved to Maryland, named Thomas Fenwick. Although its name suggests it is an island, it is more of a peninsula and was once known as a place where pirates came to bury their treasure! (Pretty, exciting huh?)
Whether or not your find some hidden pirate’s booty on Fenwick Island, you can rest assured that the quiet resort area is a treasure itself. In the summertime, Fenwick Island State Park allows visitors to engage in activities such as surf fishing, sun bathing, windsurfing and more.
Probably the most endearing feature of Fenwick Island, is the historical 87 foot tall lighthouse that still stands today. It is known as an important landmark along the Delaware coast and is over 150 years old! August 1, 2009 marked it’s 150th Anniversary of being lit way back in 1859. To have such a rich piece of history within driving distance, is quite an exciting thought. Even in these colder months, why not take a drive out to Fenwick Island and let your friends and family take a walk around this historical Lighthouse. Imagine the amazing pictures you could take as well … (Can you say Instagram and Facebook?)
