Once upon a time (75 years ago) in a land far, far away (Henlopen Acres to be exact) there gathered a group of women determined to create a space where artists could gather, learn, teach and display their works of art. Thanks to a generous donation of land by a local Colonel, the Art League of Rehoboth was able to establish at 12 Dodds Lane in Rehoboth Beach. Since that time, the Art League has set forth clear and precise goals that would help their vision to come alive. “We are a beacon of creative inspiration where art comes to life,” is the exact quotation from the League’s Mission Statement. In order to see this statement come to pass, they have aspired to be the leading venue to offer inspiration, discourse and a learning environment for artists of all ages. By ensuring their art programs are readily available to all who are interested, they also have been able to support and develop beginning artists and the artistic profession. Lastly they have set forth a goal to keep their organization healthy as to support their underlying mission.

The variety of classes offered at the Rehoboth Art League is quite impressive. The classes range from open studios where local artists can share techniques, all the way to master level courses for the more advanced artist. Summer camps are also available for children. All it takes is one little search during the period of your choice, to see that the projects covered over any span of time are endless. For example, this summer between the months of May through August, classes range from iPhoneography (yes that’s a real thing) to Foundations of Drawing, Pottery Basics, Painting your Vacation and much more. There were 25 options to be exact. Class length varies as well. Students can elect courses that last a mere 1 to 4 days or an entire week long. In addition to classes offered, the Rehoboth Art League also hosts numerous events throughout the year for curious locals and visitors to enjoy. Film screenings in conjunction with the Rehoboth Film League, Cottage Tours of Art, an Outdoor Fine Art Show in August, a Holiday Craft Show in November and a Holiday Open House in December are just a few of the main occurrences that the Art League oversees on its campus. Speaking of it’s main campus, the League recently opened a second location in Lewes, at 12000 Old Vine Blvd. This location offers exhibits as well as an Open Studio for League members to utilize.
