Yesterday the Young Marrieds Group at my church had such a gathering. Around 5pm, friends starting pouring in by the bunches, with their small children in tow. It was brutally hot outside - like the suffocating kind of hot - but somehow everyone seemed to just look past it. After all, that's just what you do to enact one of the most "American" traditions you can involve yourself with. It was a pot luck sort of gathering, so couples came bearing gifts of potato salad, chips, soda, cookies and more. We sipped on our beverages, laughed and enjoyed life in that moment the way it was meant to be enjoyed.

During all of the fellowship, however, I couldn't help but notice our incredible hosts scurrying around prepping and serving the guests. Another couple from our group was hosting the event at their home. As many times as I offered to help, they politely told me to just enjoy myself. Maybe it's the workaholic in me, but it was almost torture to see our friends running back and forth to the grill as we all chatted and watched nearby. Don't get me wrong, I was truly appreciating time to just relax, but my heart went out to the ones doing the cooking over a hot grill in 90 degree weather. Then after all the cooking was completed, side items were neatly placed on a table with serving utensils and drinks were poured, the work only began. I cringe to think about the clean up - not just the throwing away of trash - but scrubbing out the grill, wiping down the counters, washing all of the dishes and getting your house in order after the tornado of friends finally left.
