Surviving Snow Days
When snowed in, the temperament of you and your family may progress as such … “Yay, it’s family time!” Followed by some restlessness and cabin fever, ending in complete upset at the sight of one another. We get it! There is no where to go, nothing to do and no one to see for days, except eachother. After awhile, the TV becomes a bit boring (if it’s working) and playing in the cold temperatures outside becomes less magical as the days drag by.
So we’ve stated the down side of snow days, but cheer up, won’t you? It’s not all bad… As we mentioned before, snow days are a chance for some forced family fun. It may sound less than delightful, but if not for a blizzard, how else would be all slow down, sit down and get reacquainted with one another? Let’s take this time of being trapped and turn it into what it could be – a blessing. A rare moment where there are no deadlines, no trips to be made. Nothing to do but slow down and spend time, a rare commodity, with the people we love.
We’ve got a few ideas on how to make the days a little more fun. Who knows, these could be some memories that you always look back on with warm feelings. All it takes is a little effort!
#1 – Light candles everywhere! You may be surprised at how much heat a cluster of candles can produce. Plus, there’s nothing more warm and cozy than flickering flames. Of course, be careful to avoid any fire hazards, but snuggle up with warm blankets and surround yourself with soft flickering candles. There is nothing more relaxing and conducive to good conversation.
#2 – Picnic by the fireplace. Nothing takes of the cold chill of a blizzard, like a good fire. Throw down a blanket, grab your food and pretend you are picnicking outside on a sunny day! Enjoy the hot fire and laughter sure to ensue.
#3 – Create a scavenger hunt. I used to do this for my sisters on my grandparents’ farm. We’d spend long weeks in Kentucky in the middle of no where. So I’d write out clues that would lead my younger siblings running from place to place in search of little slips of paper I had hidden. Gather the children in your home and have them wait in one room, while you hide clues throughout your house. It will entertain them for quite some time!
#4 – Deep Clean! Ok, we know it doesn’t sound fun at all, but sometimes a deep clean of your home can make you feel a bit superb. You can’t ever seem to get it done when you’re running to and from all of your responsibilities, so why not now? Make it a family affair by dividing up rooms between everyone snowed in. Blare some upbeat music and conquer!
#6 – Board Games may be the oldest answer to boredom, but it’s still a good one. Dust off the old boxes that have been sitting in your closet, and game away! Make it challenging, have a tournament and get creative. You may not feel like it at first, but upon completion, you’ll feel a lot better than if you had watched movies all day long…
