A Little Bit of Britt in Lewes
My husband and I are quite fascinated with all things British. As a matter of fact, we took one day out of our honeymoon to Ireland, to jet over to London and cram in as much sight seeing as possible in less than 24 hours. We were able to tour West Minster Abbey and see the burial places of individuals such as Charles Darwin, Jane Austin and many kings, queens, poets, politicians and more. We enjoyed high tea at Herod's Department Store and walked up to the gates of Buckingham Palace itself.
Upon our return to America, you can imagine we missed our days oversea and certainly missed our time in London! Imagine our surprise when we realized that there are several British themed restaurants in the area, including one of our favorites - The Rose and Crown. Even the exterior is decorated with thick black trim and a lacquered red door, resembling an iconic London phone booth. (Mind you, I did make sure to get a picture with a real one on our honeymoon... After all, what was I to post on Instagram and Facebook?)
When you walk through the front doors, you feel as if you've stepped into Britain as your eyes scan the decor. Dark wood paneling surrounds you and immediately to your right is a bar with tall leather stools. Located in the charming town of Lewes, at 142 Second Street, the restaurant is adjacent to Hotel Rodney. There is actually an interior entrance to the restaurant from the hotel lobby. So visiting guests have easy access to the delicious food and delightful atmosphere. Bangers and Mash are of course on the menu, as well as a few other authentic foods such as: Open Faced Pot Roast, Lamb Loin Chops, Fish and Chips as well as some regular items for those less adventurous. (Preaching to the choir on that one...) Hamburgers, sandwiches, salads and many other seafood options are on the menu, which can be viewed online by clicking here.
Needless to say, my hubby and I frequent this restaurant, especially when we have company in town. After perusing through the streets of Lewes, its boutiques and lovable shops, the Rose and Crown is a great place to grab lunch or dinner. It's ambiance is always impressive and our friends and family love the big leather booths. One of our favorite spots to sit is in the far back corner. A raised platform area holds a big table large enough for 6 or so, and contains an old wooden bench as well as wall hangings that boast of British elements. To visit their full website, click here.
